5 tips to stop your baby from crying in public places

Decided to catch up with your friends at a great local restaurant and all of a sudden your baby starts crying. What do you do?Everyone in the restaurant starts looking at you and shaking their heads.

As you try to calm yourself down your baby cries even louder.Familiar?

It’s the worst, a baby crying in a public place can be stressful for both mummy and everyone around you.Here are some tricks to calm your baby in public places that are assured to work;

Breastfeeding

The boob always works for me and my bubba.I think it’s the only thing that seems to work nowadays before i would sing the alphabet and that would distract him for a bit but now he is all about the boobs hahaha.

Of course you need a cover up to ward off 2 or 3 judgemental eyes.I sometimes use a scarf or jacket whatever is available or at hand but always keep in mind that there are chances that your loved one may want to share yo bits with the world so make sure it’s all properly covered.

Switch it up

Get up and start moving, maybe your lo(lil one)needs a change of environment.Whilst on the move you might wanna rock him and sing to him or the usual shushing to calm him down and let him know everything is fine.

If your baby is a newborn or below four months Dr Robert Hamilton has a great technique called “the hold” where he gently rocks the baby and this technique generally quietens your baby down. You can find the link below.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2C8MkY7Co8

Investigate

You need to find out why your loved one is crying he might be hungry, hot, tired or just bothered.Once you find that out you are one step away from a peaceful lo.Sometimes our loved ones can become over stimulated and they just need to calm down.

Too many people, loud music or being separated from their caregivers can all be overwhelming. Our little ones grasp things in little bits so you might wanna introduce some things little by little.

Bag of magic tricks

Every mom has one, that bag you carry wherever you go that brings all the magic. Before Kai my handbag had lotion, lipstick, gum and tissue now, hahaha i don't think i have time to finish the list.It ranges from food, water, to diapers and toys to distract the lil one.

Times like these call for the vitality of the bag, my son’s once favourite toy was a gift from his nana and every time I would whip it out he would be distracted to let me have a bite or two.

Find something to distract your loved one the bigger and brighter the better.

Work around their schedule

See the thing with these little rascals is, the world does revolve around them. You have to make sure if you are going out that it is not clashing with their nap time.A tired baby makes a cranky baby.

Before you leave for dinner at that nice restaurant make sure you have fed them and prepared them for the journey ahead. When traveling choose their nap time when they are simply tired and sleepy so they can sleep off most part of their trip.

I remember my worst experience with Kai in a public place. We had gone out for dinner and we were still waiting to get inside. From nowhere my son starts wailing I had to rush home and abort my eating mission. What helps keep your baby calm in a public setting?
